Obama's South Carolina win deals a blow to Clinton's chances
The race to become Democrat nominee for president has become a choice between "the past and the future", Barack Obama said after storming home to win the South Carolina primary by double the votes of his rivals, following a bruising and acrimonious battle with the Clintons.
Senator Obama's win, achieved despite accusations that candidates were trying to incite a racial divide among voters, was far bigger than any polls had predicted. It will give him enormous momentum going into Super Tuesday on February 5, when 22 states vote.
The campaign teams immediately fanned out across the Super Tuesday states to areas where they think they can swing voters or which are rich in delegates, such as California and New York.
In the next week they will spend tens of millions of dollars on TV advertising to blitz half the nation with their message. Senator Obama's win creates a real contest with his main rival, Hillary Clinton, who was once seen as the inevitable nominee.
I knew Obama would win in the South. It's a close race between Obama and Clinton. I don't think John Edwards stands a chance but anything can happen in this race.
